Quick LBNA Question

From: lininil (letterboxing@mac.com) | Date: 2006-02-16 00:00:28 UTC
When I try to cancel a retired box the LBNA site actually tries to convince me to keep it
because finders may be tagged to it. Personally I hate to have to wade through obsolete
clues but I'm sure others like to see what was. Would there be an advantage to the site to
let these obsolete clues go elsewhere or be deleted and allow the finder's tags to remain
for deleted boxes for those who like the service? I have not deleted my retired boxes
because of the message I get.

You could always update the status of the box to "ignore"

I suggest putting *RETIRED* or something similar in the
letterbox name so that the status is clear.

While this may be a quick question, I believe the answer can even
be quicker. Delete the clue and let the finder write in their
logbook what their F count is.
I realize that this concept is fairly unpopular with many
letterboxers, but considering the space the clue takes up, why
should this practice be continued?
With the current practice of registering Fs on the site, then the
number of clue sheets with no letterboxes can only increase over
time. This was originally a site that held clues to letterboxes not
a site to register your finds.
I realize that this topic has been hashed over, but maybe it is time
to rehash it. Or maybe a poll should be considered?

Personally, I'd really like to see everyone remove all the boxes/clues
for boxes that no longer exist. It clutters up the site and makes it a
more time consuming process when looking at clues in an area we will be
visiting on vacation. It's amazing how many we ran across recently
that had "Box Missing" in the clues. We appreciate the note, and I
know we can flag it as ignore, but I would rather not even see the
clue. I think that leaving the clue on the site may discourage others
from hiding a new box in a nearby area. If there is no intention to
replace a box, just delete it and move on.

I don't think anyone other than a very new boxer could maintain an
accurate count just by using the LBNA site. There are clues that are
posted only on other sites, boxes that were only hid for an event and
never posted, certain WOM clues, etc, etc. I think those who want to
keep a count (I am one of them) need to maintain their own count - not
rely on a single website to do it.

And the problem with a box flagged "ignore" if it's missing is that if it's
replaced, the person who decided to "ignore" it will never see that the box
has replaced then.

I'd much rather see the clues taken off the site and then reposted once the
box has been replaced.

If the box is missing, many placers indicate that at the beginning of the
clues, but few placers actually put that in the title of the box so that it
can be seen without opening up the clues.

If the boxes *are* going to remain on LbNA, which I'm not in favor of, but
if they *are*, it would be really nice if placers put "RETIRED" or "MISSING"
right at the beginning of the name of the box. That can then be removed if
a missing box is replaced or a retired box is brought back out of
retirement.

My feelings exactly. I will just delete my retired boxes. I have the status marked retired
and I include the note in the clues too but it just seems wasteful. I was just questioning
the statement warning that LBNA gives the owner when they try to delete a box. The site
behaves as if it wants retired and missing boxes to be saved.

Seeing as how the purpose of letterboxing.org is to provide a place
for listing letterbox clues, and a missing-not-to-be-replaced
letterbox has no clues, it really does not belong there any longer
in my opinion. Even with a tag of 'RETIRED' in the box name, which
does make it a little easier, it clutters up the site with listings
that are no longer valid letterboxes.
